war brides

tonight for fhe we went to the library to return some blu ray movies that dev borrowed. H wanted to see if the art square she made for the winter games was still on the wall in the community space at the art gallery. well, the area was under construction and we were told the display was gone! so we went into the one room exhibit about war brides. It was a simple exhibit with rough wood boards painted with images of canadian war brides. there was a sculpture of a whole bunch of brides made out of one piece of wire. it was interesting to see how the kids reacted to the display. C sat in the middle of the big room and looked at the images (and remembered the time he and his dad went to the gallery and participated in a japanese tea ceremony). H asked lots of good questions, and M read many of the informative captions under the art. i think war brides had to be so brave. one story was of a bride came to canada after her husband. when she got here he met her at the train with a new, pregnant woman and he asked her for a divorce before she was off the train. outside the gallery was a large photo collage of many of the art pieces and the actual brides today. how cool to see how they aged and that they saw their stories come to life for others. i can imagine that many of these marriages were not easy, and i'm sure that some of them did not last for long, but i really wonder how many of them survived and grew into strong loving families?
