This is what I woke up to this morning. I heard footsteps on the deck and quietly pulled up the blind. I was not surprised at who the visitors were because they have been visiting us at all hours of the day and night lately. I was surprised that they we there so early, as it was -35 this morning. The neighbourhood deer population have been as many as 7, including 2 with quite large horns. But his morning only 2 came for a snack from our bird feeder.
This bigger deer was happily licking the seeds from the feeder. I recognize him as one of the 'regulars'.
This smaller friend could not reach the seeds from this side of the deck, and when it tried to move in on the other side for a lick, the big guy would lift up his hoof as if he was going to hit with it and little guy would back off.
I think he spotted me!
I was amazed at how close he came to the house, and to the windows.
As my H says "it never gets old".
I should add that the cedar waxwings were out in full force in the yard today too! The would converge by the dozen on a tree and then something would start them and in a flurry, they would fly off, and then in another flurry they would return to eat any berries they could find! I love living in the city but having some of the benefits of the country here, too!
And I'll share these photos (because I accidentally uploaded them with the deer!). Not from our backyard, but from hills and dales that C raced around in the summer and fall. He has so much fun riding! I am so proud of him and his love for this sport. This is not an easy spectator sport because in order to watch you need to perch on the side of the hill and wait. Thankfully, someone else went and did that and these are some of their great shots!
It is so fun to see him do this! He loves it and has such a hard time when the season is over.
Looking at these photos and then at C today, it is amazing how much he has grown in just a few months! Hang in there C. Riding season will be here before you know it!
