Happy 100th Birthday!

Here we are with Grandma Marie about 1999.

Grandma Marie lived with us and was really an important part of the kids daily activities. The girls would have 'Postum' and toast with Gram in the morning (her morning started around 9:30) and then later in the day (after nap time) they would go and have a visit on Gram's bed.

They each had a favorite book that they liked to look at with her. M had an animal book and H had a bird book and they would sit or lie together and look at the pictures while Gram read about them. C would toodle in and out of her room and sometimes play on her floor. I know she had special treats in her room and the kids would often come out of her room after a visit with something yummy! Sometimes, when C was sleeping, I would leave him with Gram and sneak out with the girl(s).

It was a blessing for us to have such a wise back-up and support system. She was encouraging to me and Dev and to the kids. She cheered their successes (and ours) and had a hug and kiss when needed. She would remind the girls of their manners, encourage them to eat their dinner, listen to them, and it was so nice for me to be able to take a few minutes for myself everyday.

One time when H and M were arguing about something...
H told M to 'Shut-up.'
Gram said,

"Oh, dear. That is not something you should say.
Good Mormon girls don't talk like that"

That was all it took. H didn't say that anymore.

It was pretty special for all of us to live with and get to know our Grandma and Great Grandma.
We miss her!

Tonight we had a little birthday party
for Great Grandma Ada Marie O'Brien Matkin
who would have been 100 years old today!

We celebrated her memory by having carrot cake and ice cream for dessert.
She used to say, "There's always room for ice cream!"

Then we went out to the cemetery.

She was an amazing example to all of us!
Happy 100th Birthday!

(M is is Southern Alberta with some special friends for a while. We really miss her and love her very much!
We know she misses Grandma Marie too!)
